Allen Bros is discontinuing its YS range of fittings

INDUSTRY DATABASE

ALLEN BROTHERS (FITTINGS) LTD

Allen Bros is to close its foundry, resulting in the discontinuation of its YS range of fittings.

The hardware manufacturer says while the YS range has been very successful for many decades, sales have fallen recently as boat builders switched to a more modern alternative.

In addition, the company that completed the polishing and anodising of the fittings has fallen victim to Covid-19 and despite an extensive search, Allen has been unable to source a new supplier who can meet its quality criteria.

“The investment required in the foundry, anodising and polishing could not be justified for a shrinking demand,” said a spokesperson. “Sadly, we have therefore had to make the decision to discontinue this range.”

Some of the YS items will now be manufactured by Allen using new methods and under a different name.

The new AY range will be manufactured using Allen’s VMC machines which the company says will produce more accurate and reliable products.

Bespoke designs can also be designed and machined in-house to a customer’s specification.

Ivor Barfield has died, aged 97

INDUSTRY DATABASE

STA-LOK TERMINALS LTD

Ivor Barfield, inventor of the STA-LOK self-fit Terminal has died, aged 97 years.

An engineer at heart, Ivor invented the Terminal in the 1970s, just one of a number of innovative products he designed and developed throughout his career, seeing most through development into production.

As his family pointed out, the STA-LOK Terminal was developed in Ivor’s garden shed, in an era without technology, an era where everything was crafted by hand – a great testament to his engineering skill.

Encouraged by the performance of the STA-LOK Terminal, Ivor applied for and was granted Lloyds approval and gained the support of yacht riggers, boat builders and yacht owners around the world for which he was forever grateful.

Vision

“Manufacturing was one of Ivor’s passions,” said his family. “He was immensely proud to have established a British manufacturing company, STA-LOK Terminals Ltd, and of the staff who worked for him over the years, to achieve his vision.”

Part of this vision was to develop international markets and in 2006 this was realised with the incorporation of STA-LOK TERMINALS Inc in the USA.

With the support from customers and dedication of staff, STA-LOK has today become an established part of the global marine industry.

Ivor continued to work well into his 80’s and provided support to the company as Chairman, until his passing.

“A great family man, he founded his business on family values, which to this day continues to employ many family members,” added his family. “He was especially proud to welcome his grandson James into the company in 2019 continuing his legacy.

“An inspirational man, a brilliant mind. Much loved.”

SPORTSBOAT WORLD

Simon Russell, known as Fumesy, has passed away suddenly after contracting COVID.

Simon worked in the marine industry for more than 25 years, most recently as a director of Sportsboat World, manufacturer and worldwide distributor of the British-built, one-design keelboat SB20.

His marine industry career also included working for ten years for Jack Holt in the early 2000’s as technical sales manager selling marine dinghy and keelboat hardware to the UK boat builders and after that 11 years for Musto as corporate sales manager selling clothing to race teams around the world.

He joined Sportsboat World as director in 2018.

Simon grew up in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire and began his sailing career on nearby lakes and gravel pits, encouraged by his parents.

Larger boats

In the late 70s, Simon’s parents moved on to larger boats and he and his family began racing a mini tonner around Plymouth Sound. The boats became bigger still and Simon’s sailing moved to the Hamble and the Solent.

A move to the South Coast was the next logical step and from the late 80s onwards, Simon spent as much time as he could racing in sailing events around the UK and the world.

His sailing achievements include J24 national champion, Melges 24 national, European and world champion, Mumm 30 European champion, Etchells national, European and twice World champion, ISAF bronze medallist and three times XOD Captain’s Cup winner and member of the British Admiral’s Cup team.

Outside of sailing, Simon enjoyed classic cars, clay shooting and walking.

He leaves behind his wife Audrey, daughters Marcie and Lucie, his parents, sister Amanda and his many friends.

INDUSTRY DATABASE

SELDEN MASTS LTD

Seldén Mast has developed its first carbon furling mast, a lighter weight furling rig designed to enhance the performance of cruising yachts in the 48ft – 75ft range.

This is the first of Seldén’s new mast range and comes with an electric drive and hydraulic outhaul option

“Larger boats with small crews call for smart sail handling and we are constantly pushing our product development in that direction,” said Seldén’s CEO, Peter Rönnbäck. “The benefits of carbon fibre masts have been appreciated by racing sailors for decades so why wouldn’t a cruising sailor be offered the same deal?”

Seldén’s carbon masts, both furling and conventional, are manufactured at its facility in Gosport using its computer-controlled mandrel filament winding technique.

LEWMAR MARINE

Lewmar is to operate as a direct B2B supplier to all retail outlets, OEM clients and approved installers in the UK.

The announcement – taking effect immediately – puts an end to the company’s partnership with its long-standing distributor Aquafax.

Lewmar says the decision is in response to both changing consumer demands and in an effort to increase brand presence in its home market.

“Our aim as the leading UK leisure marine manufacture is to increase the volume of product into the marketplace and allow it to become more accessible, for the OEM builder through to end users either via our approved installer network or retailers,” said UK direct manager, Adam Cockerill. “We are confident that this new strategy will help continued growth in the UK sector, improving customer experience.”

He added: “With new systems and additional team members in place, Lewmar is poised to offer seamless operational management to our UK clients. We would finally like to thank Aquafax for their work over the past 12 years.”

And he said Lewmar will continue to work closely with its distributor network throughout the rest of the world.

Lewmar supplies hatch, anchoring, docking, deck hardware and glazing solutions.
