Wayne Palmer and Hayley Quinn from technical furniture company, Thinking Space Systems, have bought Key Yachting.

Key Yachting is the sole UK distributor for J Boats, Grand Soleil, Nautitech Catamarans and Tofinou and was founded in 1996 by Marie-Claude Heys along with her late husband, Paul.

“After 25 years, I am delighted to hand the helm over to Wayne and Hayley,” said Marie who has competed in four Figaro campaigns and two Whitbread Round the World Races.

“This year, as part of the logistics team from Miranda Merron’s Vendee Globe campaign, it really made my mind up. The time is right for me to make a change, and I am keen to get back to my roots in offshore sailing.”

Wayne Palmer founded Thinking Space Systems in 2003, which has offices in Australia, Canada, UK and the USA. Wayne is a keen sailor having competed in two Fastnet Races and currently races his J/109 Flying Jackal. Hayley Quinn is an experienced qualified accountant with a background in managing leisure focused businesses.

Swedish boat fitting manufacturer Rutgerson Marin has taken on the challenge of making sails easier to reef with the launch of a Quick Reef Solution (QRS).

The product consists of two parts of a low-friction ring that are screwed together on each side of a super ring and the sail cloth.

“This makes it childishly simple and quick to install on the sail since no tools at all are required,” said Rutgerson MD, Charlotte Rutgerson. “The large radius together with a unique Teflon coated hard anodizing gives very low friction for the line and is gentler on the sail.”

She added: “We love figuring out technical solutions that solve several difficulties at the same time and that lead to new products that are easy and fun to use.

“It is extra fun that the new product QRS is a complement to our existing product The Super Ring.”

Other product features include weight centralised on the sail compared to blocks that have been webbed on one side of the sail.

The company has also introduced its first openable block, the Rutgerson Snatch Block (RBS) that can be used on almost any block application on a boat or sail such as barber, hauler, genoa line.

The block is designed with a Rutgerson Low Friction Ring and a Dyneema loop making it suitable for low load high speed or high load low speed applications.

The block has a high working load and is designed with no loose parts. The low friction ring is anodised with a hard-coat and Teflon-impregnated anodisation with low friction properties.

The Dyneema loop has a diamond knot, developed in-house to generate twice the strength to the loop shackle compared to a standard diamond knot shackle with the same line dimension.

The products will be available from January 1, 2021.

Marlow’s environmentally friendly ropes will be used on board the SailGP fleet

SailGP has collaborated with rope manufacturer Marlow Ropes.

Marlow will serve as official rope supplier with its ropes onboard SailGP’s race boats through to 2022.

Marlow Ropes will supply SailGP with high-performing lines from its new eco-conscious ranges, including the bio-based Dyneema fiber for use onboard the high-speed F50 foiling catamarans and Blue Ocean dock lines made from 100% recycled waste from plastic bottles to aid docking.

“Not only is Marlow Ropes an industry leader, but they share our passion for sustainable innovation,” said SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts. “Their products provide the impeccable quality needed to help power our race boats, and they are achieving that in an environmentally responsible manner.

Performance

Marlow’s Blue Ocean dock lines provide an eco-alternative to standard polyester ropes, while still offering strength and stretch performance.

The rope is made from yarn manufactured from recycled waste plastic bottles, with 7.5 bottles incorporated in every metre of Blue Ocean dock line.

Marlow’s Bio-based Dyneema fibre has identical technical characteristics and performance as conventional Dyneema, but has a reduced reliance on fossil fuels, using products from waste in the pulp and timber industry as its primary raw material.

B&G is supporting disabled sailor and adventurer Natasha Lambert in her latest challenge, the ARC 2020.

Natasha began sailing at age nine, and despite being born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy has since been enduring various challenges and pushing herself to the limit and raise money for charity.

Her Bavaria Nautitech Open 46 – Blown Away – is fitted with a full B&G system including Zeus3, Triton² instrument displays, NAC3 autopilot computer, H90 radio with AIS and H50 handheld radio.

Natasha’s father, Gary, has developed a sip and puff control system, which is integrated with the B&G system on board, allowing Natasha to control the boat herself.

The first part of Natasha’s latest adventure was getting Blown Away from the UK to Gran Canaria, ready for the start of the event.

“Her system is integrated into the autopilot, so when she needs to control the sheets, she operates her tongue switch, which both changes the function of the straw from helm to sheets, and activates the autopilot,” said Amanda Lambert, Natasha’s mum. “This helps her to maintain her course whilst she adjusts the sheets, and everything worked impeccably.”

The ARC begins on November 22.

More than half of Marlow’s yachting range is manufactured using sustainable materials

Blue Ocean Doublebraid is Marlow Ropes’ latest addition to its eco-conscious Blue Ocean product range manufactured from sustainable materials.

The heat-set braid-on-braid Doublebraid is made from 100% recycled waste plastic bottles and designed to offer both strength and stretch performance.

The Blue Ocean Doublebraid follows the release of Marlow’s Blue Ocean Dockline, which offers sailors an eco-alternative to standard polyester ropes.

Since the launch of the Blue Ocean Dockline in 2018, more than half of Marlow’s yachting range is now manufactured using sustainable materials.

“It is important to us at Marlow that we take responsibility to become more sustainable and provide our customers with more rope options,” said Marlow’s leisure marine director Paul Honess. “We have worked hard over the last couple of years to eliminate plastics from our ranges, lower our carbon footprint and introduce sustainable materials.

“With half of our range now made using these sustainable materials we are getting closer to achieving our target of using 100% reliance on recycled materials by 2030.

The line is available on the reel as standard and also as spliced finished assemblies on request.

Allie Smith is head of group events at Oyster Yachts

Allie Smith has been appointed as head of group events at Oyster Yachts.

Her role will include developing and managing Oyster Yachts’ international rallies and events including the next Oyster World Rally, which will start from Antigua in January 2022.

Allie previously worked as general manager for Mike Golding Yacht Racing, before being appointed as marketing manager at Clipper Ventures.

She founded Sailing Logic, growing the company to become the UK’s leading yacht race company with a fleet of identical 40ft racing yachts.

More recently Allie has worked with Tracy Edwards MBE and The Maiden Factor project managing the Whitbread yacht’s round the world promotional tour.

“Oyster events are world-renowned and have been instrumental in helping Oyster owners, families and crew enjoy over 20 million blue water sailing miles and 90 world circumnavigations,” she said.

In addition to hands-on organisation of events, Allie will be working with Oyster’s chief commercial officer, Paul Adamson, looking at key sponsorship and commercial partnerships between Oyster and other aligned brands.

Declan Clamp is the new assistant project manager at RigPro

Declan Clamp has joined RigPro, the service division of Halls Spars, Future Fibres and Southern Spars, as an assistant project manager.

Declan formerly worked at Marlow Ropes as sales representative since 2018 and during this time has had great success, thanks to his knowledge and previous roles as a rigger.

“My time at Marlow has hugely increased my knowledge of fibre running rigging in all its applications.

Marlow has been pushing the boundaries bringing the first recycled running rigging and mooring ropes to the market and it has been great to be a part of that.”
