RONSTAN UK

Ronstan has been rolling out new products over the year, adding to its range of lashing and high load blocks with high load to weight.

New soft attachment blocks are said to achieve the highest ratings for dynamic load versus sheave diameter in Ronstan’s keelboat block range, says Jason Belben of Ronstan suppliers SailTek.

The SA blocks incorporate a full contact, self-lubricating composite journal bearing running on a stainless steel hub to reduce friction under load. Thrust washers are positioned between the sheave and cheek plates to handle high side loads, and testing has shown this to be more effective than ball bearings.

With a Dyneema SK99 cord shackle and titanium dog bone, the blocks are suitable for applications such as 2:1 main halyards, headsail and spinnaker sheets, mast base halyard deflection and running backstays.

Lashing block

Ronstan has released the RF35109HL 30mm lashing block for high load applications such as high load vang purchase systems on Moth and Lasers, halyards on skiffs, cunninghams, outhauls and backstay purchase systems.

With a maximum line of 8mm, the block has a maximum working load of 550kg and a breaking load of 1650kg. The hub can also double as a becket take off point.

Also proving to be popular with Ronstan customers is the new small swivel cleat arm, the RF50, used primarily for self-tacking jib control on dinghies such as the 49er but also useful for control lines on some larger yachts.

Sailing and windsurfing have been reinstated for GCSE, AS and A-level physical education (PE) qualifications.

The activities have been included in the Department for Education’s (DfE) revised activity lists and will be assessed in 2021 for AS-level and 2022 for GCSEs and A-levels.

“It’s fantastic to see sailing and windsurfing ‘officially’ reinstated within the PE activity lists,” said Amanda Van Santen, chief instructor of the RYA sailing and windsurfing training schemes. “The RYA has worked closely with AQA (an awarding body) over the last year to develop the specified criteria for assessment, and we’re delighted to now see this come into effect.”

And she said she hoped the decision will inspire more people to get afloat and take part in both sailing and windsurfing.

The RYA is to continue to work with other awarding bodies to assist with the development of assessment criteria and reinstatement of the activities. The final decision and content of the criteria will remain with each individual body.

HARKEN UK LTD

Sailing equipment manufacturer Harken has been sold to its employees.

Peter Harken, who founded Harken in 1967 with his late brother, Olaf, said that over the years they had been approached by lots of good people keen to acquire the business.

”We turned down every offer that didn’t present a brighter future for our people than we could create on our own,” he said.

A place where people take chances

“My brother Olaf, Art Mitchel and I tried to build a place where people could take chances and not be afraid to fail. More and more it’s our people who have made this place the leader it is. It’s time for those who have worked with us to own Harken.”

And he expressed his confidence in the new leadership team – Bill Goggins as chief executive, Matt Malec as chief operating officer and chief finance officer, John Jensen. He also praised the executive committee, saying he looked forward to seeing them make their mark.

Bill Goggins said that the employees had been preparing for a day like this their whole careers. “We have so much gratitude for Peter, Olaf, and Art for the trust they have shown in all of us,” he said. “It will always be Peter and Olaf Harken’s company, but starting today, it is in our care and custody.”

The smartlink wireless load sensor Photo: Cyclops Marine

Cyclops Marine has launched a new wireless load sensor designed to help sailors find their groove, record their settings and most importantly repeat those settings.

smartlink delivers onboard, real-time dynamic load measuring, wirelessly feeding the data to a mobile application or the boat’s instruments via NMEA2000 Gateway and cable. The sensor was developed in partnership with INEOS TEAM UK.

“At INEOS TEAM UK, we consider Cyclops Marine our go-to experts when it comes to wireless load sensors,” said Andrew McLean, team leader systems engineering, INEOS TEAM UK. “Forging a close relationship with our suppliers is one of our core values, especially when that company manufactures in the UK.”

Find your winning settings

Manufactured in low density titanium, smartlink is lightweight and simple to add inline to any soft stay or sheet. Once fitted, the smartlink will help sailors find their winning settings and be able to repeat those proven settings for the wind conditions and the sea state.

“At any point in time, sailors can see what loads they are working with,” said Ian Howarth, chief executive at Cyclops Marine. “Teams are feeding back they are trimming their boats better, more consistently and sailing faster. Real time loading with visible numbers makes this easy.”

Available for loads of 2, 5 and 10 tonnes, smartlink has a battery life of 200 hours allowing for around 25 to 30 days of racing. smartlink is the second product in the smart range from Cyclops Marine, following the launch of its smart tune turn screw.

John Buckley has acquired heritage boat-fittings manufacturer Davey & Co

INDUSTRY DATABASE

DAVEY & CO LONDON LTD

Heritage boat-fittings manufacturer Davey & Company London, has been acquired by John Buckley, owner of Harbour Marine Services.

The acquisition seals a long-standing connection between the two companies – Harbour Marine specialises in classic boat restoration including several Little Dunkirk Ships on which Davey’s traditionally-manufactured bronze fittings have been used.

“I have great respect for Davey & Co’s British made ethos and high-quality product,” says John. “My intention is to protect that and create many more opportunities for Davey to be known as the ‘must-have’ quality fitting for traditional boat owners internationally.”

Davey and Co, established in 1885, is a leading British manufacturer of traditional boat fittings to boat-owners worldwide and still uses many of the patterns and designs that were used in Victorian times.

Traditional style

This results in authentic, high quality and covetable fittings that are perfect for classic boats and also bring a traditional style to more modern vessels.

Davey’s MD of 25 years, Peter Tracey, will be stepping down in the early autumn with Jeff Webber taking over the role. The business will continue to operate from its Colchester base whilst continuing to employ all existing staff.

Jeff has more than 20 years’ experience of the marine industry and has been brought in to deliver John’s vision for the business.

“This is a great opportunity and I look forward to taking up the reins from where Peter left off. Both John and I agree that British made philosophy of Davey & Co and quality products must be preserved.”
